The boiler is the heart and soul of a structure as it keeps your home warm and toasty! Without boiler maintenance in Toronto, life can become unmanageable. That’s why it is crucial to schedule regular boiler service in East York, even if you don’t suspect a problem. After all, it’s better to take a preventive approach than a reactive one.

Here are some common issues to keep an eye on. Note, only a qualified technician should attempt boiler maintenance.

Your Boiler Is Leaking

A leak is never a good sign. Depending on where the leak is coming from, it may be a pressure value, which signifies the pressure is too high. Take a look at the pressure gauge needle. A small drop in pressure is expected, but if you notice a sudden drop, you may have a problem. If this occurs, check for water leaks and cold spots on the radiators.

Another reason why your boiler might be leaking is due to a broken seal that may need to be replaced. If the leak is at the bottom of the tank, look for rust or corrosion.

Over Pressurization

Just as low pressure is a problem, too much pressure is just as dangerous. If your boiler is unused for a period of time, it can take on too much water, especially if the system is too cold. When a pressure valve is leaking water, you can also expect over-pressurization.

Make sure to inspect your boiler system before and after you go on a vacation or anytime you are expecting to not use your boiler for a while.

Your Boiler Repeatedly Turns Off

Low pressure may be the cause of the boiler turning off and on. If not, it may be a thermostat issue or too much air within the heating system. The boiler will shut down if the water is not properly circulating due to a valve issue or low water flow.

On the other hand, the radiator may have a build-up of air, which is causing the heat to be affected. A cold patch on the radiator shows there is an issue within the radiator itself. This can be solved with bleeding the radiator by releasing the air in the system.

Unusual Boiler Noise

All mechanical appliances make noises. The key is to determine what noises are normal and which ones are a warning sign.

A whistling noise can be caused by sludge built up on the heat exchanger. A banging or clanking sound could mean the pump is failing or the fan may be damaged. Buzzing might mean you have to replace the thermostat conductor or that the electrics need an overhaul. With humming, there may be a loose part within the pump. A gurgling sound means too much air in the pipes and time to bleed the radiator.
